Before the Wedding: The Engagement Meeting

Before Caity and Vinay’s engagement session, I suggested we meet for a glass of wine and a bite to eat, just the three of us, no cameras. I had coffee. They had wine. We sat together and I listened.

That conversation gave me everything I needed to walk into their wedding weekend already connected to them in a real and meaningful way. By the time I arrived at their Hindu ceremony weeks later, I was not arriving as a vendor. I was arriving as someone who already understood their story and was honored to tell it in photographs.

That changes everything about the work.

The Hindu Ceremony: A Private Family Estate

The Hindu ceremony was held at a private family estate, and from the moment I walked in I knew I was being invited into something extraordinary.

The mandap had been dressed in a full wall of orange roses and fuchsia blooms, dense and vibrant, in tones that felt like pure celebration. Silk draping in matching flame tones framed the space behind gilded ceremonial chairs. Marigold garlands hung overhead. Incense moved through the air. The chanting of the pandit filled the entire space with a resonance that settled into the room and stayed there.

Caity wore a sage and blush printed lehenga with delicate block printing that moved beautifully in the light. Her henna was intricate and extraordinary, mandalas and paisleys winding from her fingertips to her elbows, gold bangles stacked high. She was dressed with the kind of intention that makes a photographer slow down and pay attention to every detail.

Vinay stood in a cream sherwani embroidered with silver thread, his sehra of pearls and gold framing his face with quiet regality. When they performed the varmala, the sacred exchange of garlands, the joy on the pandit’s face told you everything you needed to know about the energy in that space.

I feel a deep gratitude for being trusted with moments like these.

The Sangeet at Estate Yountville

If the Hindu ceremony was the sacred chapter, the Sangeet at Estate Yountville was the joyful one. And the energy in that courtyard from the moment guests arrived was something I will not forget.

One hundred and fifty guests filled Estate Yountville’s warm stone pavilions and brick courtyards in a palette of jewel tones and silk that was extraordinary to photograph. Red banarasi sarees with gold zari work. Deep violet lehengas. Embroidered anarkalis in saffron and emerald. The visual richness of a South Asian celebration brought to life in the middle of wine country is something I had never experienced at this scale before, and every corner of that venue gave me something worth capturing.

Caity arrived in a gold embroidered two-piece lehenga that caught the California evening light beautifully. Her henna was still rich and deep. She moved through the space with the ease of someone completely in her element, surrounded by the people she loves most.

The tables were set in coral and orange linens with arrangements by Flowers by Edgar that brought maximalist energy and unapologetic color to every corner of the room. Hot pink roses, orange blooms, jewel-toned stems, all of it abundant and exactly right for the night.

The bridesmaids performed in their red banarasi sarees with infectious energy that drew every eye in the courtyard. The little ones ran between the tables in their embroidered lehengas. Caity and Vinay played the shoe game back to back, shoes raised in the air, the crowd roaring around them. And there were quiet moments between family members, embraces and tears of joy, that I consider some of my favorite images from the entire weekend.

Estate Yountville held all of it beautifully. It is a venue that understands celebration, and on this particular Friday evening in early June it delivered everything it has ever promised.

The Wedding at Beaulieu Gardens

Beaulieu Gardens in Rutherford is a venue that every wine country photographer dreams about. Ancient oak trees with canopies wide enough to shade entire ceremonies. Manicured lawns that roll from one garden space to the next. A dining trellis draped in fig leaves and string lights that has hosted some of the most beautiful wedding dinners in all of wine country. It is a venue that asks you to slow down and pay attention. On this particular Saturday it gave us everything.

Getting Ready

I arrived at Estate Yountville at noon to begin capturing details while Caity was in hair and makeup with the extraordinary Teresa Song and her team. The detail flatlay Caity had assembled was a story in itself. The invitation suite from Tiny Details, pages of deckled-edge handmade paper with garden illustrations and a gold wax seal monogram, surrounded by scattered coral peonies and rose petals. Her rings. Her henna. Her jewelry. Every object chosen with intention, every object worth slowing down for.

By early afternoon we were at Beaulieu Gardens, and the space was already extraordinary.

The Ceremony

What Flowers by Edgar created for this ceremony is among the most breathtaking floral work I have photographed in my career in Napa Valley. An asymmetrical arch of blue hydrangea, blush garden roses, white ranunculus, ivory spray roses, and soft peach blooms that arched dramatically from one side of the Park Lawn and cascaded down in a waterfall of petals and greenery that stopped every guest in their tracks. The aisle florals built in height from the entrance to the altar, creating a corridor of blooms that felt like a passage into something entirely new.

The bridal party arrived in a palette pulled from the Napa landscape at its most tender: sage, pale sky blue, warm blush, butter yellow. One flower girl wore a pale blue tulle gown embroidered from hem to waist with multicolored flowers in pinks and lavenders and creams and greens, and she walked that aisle with the particular gravity of a small child who understands she has been given an important job.

The ceremony was warm, joyful, and deeply personal. The recessional to Get Lucky sent 200 guests to their feet and sent the entire wedding party into cocktail hour with enormous smiles.

Cocktail Hour

The Sunken Garden during golden hour, with a string quartet playing and Iron Horse sparkling wine on trays and Paula LeDuc Catering passing deviled eggs with white truffle and caviar purses with creme fraiche and smoked salmon cones with black tobiko caviar, is one of my favorite environments to work in anywhere in wine country. The bar was flanked by enormous arrangements of blue hydrangea. The light was extraordinary. The guests were radiant.

I photographed family portraits in the ceremony space while guests settled into cocktail hour, the floral arch still standing behind us, and then we rejoined the celebration already in progress.

Dinner Under the Trellis

The trellis at Beaulieu Gardens is one of the great gifts of Napa Valley wedding photography. Ancient fig trees have grown over a pergola structure for decades, creating a canopy of layered green that filters evening light into something soft and golden and irreplaceable. And suspended from that structure, Flowers by Edgar had built eight hanging floral installations of cream garden roses, blush spray roses, soft peach blooms, and blue hydrangea, each one a dense lush cloud of petals hanging above the tables as though the garden had decided to grow downward. They were among the most extraordinary things I have ever photographed.

The tables below were set with layers of intention that revealed themselves slowly the longer you looked. Long banquet tables in sage and white Liverpool stripe linens. Haviland china in camelia, grey, and white intermixed across the settings. Cutipol gold and white flatware. Water glasses in pink, jade, and sapphire that turned the entire tablescape into something luminous. Low centerpieces of blush roses, white ranunculus, and blue delphinium in scalloped white ceramic vessels. The sweetheart table anchored at the head of it all, glowing in candlelight as the evening deepened.

Paula LeDuc served a gem lettuce salad with pickled rhubarb and pink peppercorn vinaigrette, followed by coriander-crusted salmon, slow-cooked Petaluma chicken with preserved lemon, and a full Indian platter of kadhai paneer, saag, vegetable kofta, dal, gulab jamun, and garlic naan that honored Vinay’s heritage at the dinner table with the same intention the Hindu ceremony had honored it at the altar. Failla Chardonnay and Failla Pinot Noir poured tableside. This was not wedding food. This was a meal designed to be remembered.

The cake from Flour and Bloom arrived in four tiers of white fondant waves with a diagonal cascade of fresh flowers. DJ Works opened the dance floor and the evening became something beautifully alive.

The first dance gave way to a father-daughter dance and a mother-son dance, and then Vinay danced with Mila, the little girl who had walked the aisle with such seriousness earlier in the afternoon and who was now being held gently on the dance floor by the man who was about to become her stepfather. It is one of the most tender photographs I have ever made.

The after party moved back to Estate Yountville and continued until two in the morning, because this particular group of people was not ready for the weekend to end. I understood completely.

What Full Wedding Weekend Coverage Means

Most photographers photograph a wedding. What I offer is the full celebration, whatever shape that takes and however many days it spans.

Caity and Vinay’s weekend was not one event. It was a Hindu ceremony at a private family estate filled with incense and chanting and sacred ritual. It was a Sangeet at one of Yountville’s most beloved venues, alive with color and dancing and the particular joy of a South Asian celebration in wine country. It was a garden wedding at Beaulieu Gardens that I will hold as a benchmark for years to come.

Every chapter of a wedding weekend like this deserves the same level of artistry and presence. The couples who choose full weekend coverage receive not just more photographs but a more complete story, one that begins before the ceremony and ends long after the last dance.
