JOURNAL

There is a moment I witness at nearly every elopement I photograph in Napa Valley. The couple is standing together, just the two of them or surrounded by the handful of people who matter most, and there is this exhale. This deep, full exhale that says we did it exactly the way we wanted to.
That is the elopement difference. And it is why I have spent years not just photographing elopements in wine country but building the programs that make them possible at some of Napa Valley’s most iconic properties.
If you are considering eloping in Napa Valley or Sonoma County, this guide is for you. Everything you need to know, from the venues to the vendors to the logistics, written by someone who has been inside this world for a long time.

What Is an Elopement in Napa Valley?
Before we get into the how, let me clear up a question I hear often. What actually counts as an elopement?
In wine country, most venues consider an elopement to be a celebration of up to eighteen guests. Nineteen to forty guests is typically called a micro wedding. Both are intimate by design. Both are extraordinary when done right. And both are very different from the traditional wedding experience in ways that most couples find deeply appealing once they understand what is possible.
An elopement is not a lesser version of a wedding. It is a different kind of celebration entirely, one that prioritizes the two of you, the moment, and the place over logistics, timelines, and guest counts.
Some of the most moving ceremonies I have ever photographed have been elopements.

Why Elope in Napa Valley?
Napa Valley is one of the most breathtaking places in the world to get married, and it is also one of the most accommodating for couples who want something intimate and intentional.
The landscape does things to photographs that almost no other place on earth can replicate. The way the afternoon light moves across the vineyards. The palm trees and mountains at Carneros. The lush gardens at Bardessono. The thermal pools and rolling hills at Four Seasons Napa Valley. Every venue in wine country has its own visual signature, and an elopement gives you the time and space to really inhabit that setting rather than rushing through it between ceremony and dinner.
There is also a practical argument for eloping in Napa. The venues I work with have built elopement packages that handle the logistics for you. No coordinator required. No vendor sourcing. No months of planning. You show up, you get married, and we take care of the rest.

The CANelopes: Napa Valley’s Premier Elopement Team
I want to tell you about something I am genuinely proud of.
Over the past several years I have been part of dedicated elopement programs at some of Napa Valley’s most beloved properties, and I have helped build and launch elopement packages at several of them. We call ourselves the CANelopes, and we are a curated team of vendors who specialize in exactly this kind of intimate, elevated celebration in wine country.
What that means for you is that when you book an elopement through one of our partner venues, you are not piecing together vendors from scratch or crossing your fingers that everyone works well together. You are getting a team that has done this many times, that communicates seamlessly, and that is genuinely passionate about making your day extraordinary.
Graham, Officiant | @ceremoniesbygraham
My husband Graham is one of the warmest, most gifted officiants I have ever seen work. He has a way of making a ceremony feel both deeply personal and completely at ease, which is exactly what you want when you are standing in front of the people you love most and saying the words that matter most. The fact that he is my husband and I am your photographer means we move through your day as a unit, and that shows in the images. Graham officiates elopements at Bardessono, Four Seasons Napa Valley, and Hotel Yountville.
Rick Tan, Officiant at Carneros Resort | @tanweddingsandevents
Rick Tan is the in-house officiant at Carneros Resort and Spa and an extraordinary one at that. Rick brings deep experience in wine country ceremonies and a warmth that makes every couple feel completely at home in one of Napa’s most iconic settings. You can learn more about Rick at tanweddingsandevents.com.
Julie Stevens Design, Florals | @juliestevensdesign
Julie creates florals that feel like they belong to the landscape they are placed in. Her arrangements for elopements are lush and intentional without ever feeling overdone, and she has an extraordinary eye for what works in each specific venue environment.
Carrie Aldous, Hair and Makeup | @carriealdous
Carrie brings a level of artistry and ease to her work that makes getting ready feel like the calmest part of the day. She works quickly and quietly, she listens to what you actually want rather than what happens to be trending, and her work holds up beautifully in photographs from the first frame of the morning through the last light of the evening.
Justin Diaz, Music | @justindmusician
Justin plays live acoustic guitar through the ceremony and into the celebration, and he is a large part of why these days feel the way they do. There is something about live music in an open vineyard that a playlist simply cannot touch. He reads a room beautifully and he knows exactly when to let a moment breathe.

Where to Elope in Napa Valley
Carneros Resort and Spa
Carneros Resort and Spa has built one of the most well-oiled elopement programs in all of wine country, and I am their dedicated photographer. The property is extraordinary, with its iconic pergola, sweeping palm trees, vineyard views, and those Napa Valley mountains in the distance that photograph unlike anything else in the region.
A Carneros elopement is a fully curated experience. The venue team handles the logistics and coordinates the entire package, and you simply arrive and get married in one of the most beautiful places in California. Rick Tan serves as the in-house officiant for Carneros elopements, bringing deep wine country ceremony experience to every celebration.
Every season at Carneros offers something different. Spring brings lush greenery and soft light. Summer gives you those brilliant blue skies and golden afternoons. Fall turns the vineyards amber and the light goes warm and extraordinary. And winter, with the right indoor option, can be the most intimate and romantic season of all.
Bardessono
Bardessono in Yountville is a LEED certified luxury hotel with one of the most quietly beautiful settings in all of Napa Valley. The modern architecture, the ornamental grasses, the lush surrounding gardens, it is a venue that photographs with a different kind of sophistication than Carneros, more intimate and garden-like, and it draws couples who want something refined and understated.
I am proud to have helped launch the elopement program at Bardessono, bringing our curated CANelopes team to this extraordinary property. Graham officiates all Bardessono elopements. Reach out to inquire about availability.
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley is one of the most spectacular properties in wine country, and I had the privilege of helping bring our elopement team to this extraordinary hotel. The setting is breathtaking, with thermal pools, vineyard views, and the kind of elevated luxury that Four Seasons is known for worldwide. Graham officiates all Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley elopements. Reach out to inquire about availability.
Hotel Yountville
Hotel Yountville is another beloved Yountville property where I have helped establish our elopement program, bringing the same curated CANelopes approach to this stunning hotel. Graham officiates all Hotel Yountville elopements. Reach out to inquire about availability.

What Time of Year Is Best for a Napa Valley Elopement?
The honest answer is that any time of year can be perfect if you choose the right venue.
Peak season in wine country runs from May through October. The weather is reliably beautiful, the vineyards are lush and green in spring and summer, and golden and dramatic in fall. These months book quickly and for good reason.
But I want to make a case for winter elopements too. November through April in Napa Valley can be soft, moody, and extraordinarily intimate. The crowds are gone. The light is different, lower and more dramatic. And many of our partner venues offer indoor spaces that are warm and beautiful in ways that feel completely different from the outdoor summer experience. Some of my favorite elopement images have been made in winter.
The best time to elope in Napa Valley is whenever feels right for the two of you. We will make it beautiful regardless of the season.
What Do You Need to Legally Elope in Napa Valley?
The legal requirements for eloping in California are refreshingly simple. You need a marriage license, which you can obtain from any county clerk’s office in California. There is no waiting period in California, so you can pick up your license and get married the same day if you choose. Your license is valid for ninety days from the date it is issued.
One detail that matters specifically for elopements. A standard public marriage license requires at least one witness to sign. If it is truly just the two of you, California also offers a confidential marriage license, which requires no witnesses at all. It is worth asking the clerk which one fits your day when you apply.
I always recommend getting your license from the Napa County Clerk’s office before your elopement date so that the logistics are handled and you can simply be present on your wedding day. Requirements can change, so confirm the current details with the county when you apply.

What Does a Napa Valley Elopement Day Actually Look Like?
Every elopement is different, but here is a general sense of how a typical day unfolds with our team.
You arrive at the venue and Carrie begins hair and makeup in a beautiful private space. While you are getting ready I am photographing the details, your florals from Julie, your rings, any personal objects that tell your story. Graham arrives and connects with you both before the ceremony begins.
The ceremony itself is intimate and personal. Graham creates ceremonies that feel genuinely tailored to who you are as a couple rather than generic or formulaic. Justin plays throughout, setting an emotional tone that carries the whole experience.
After the ceremony we move into portraits. This is where having a photographer who knows your venue deeply makes all the difference. I know exactly where the light is, where the most beautiful backgrounds are, and how to move through the space efficiently so that your portrait session feels relaxed and joyful rather than rushed or posed.
And then the celebration, whether that is a private dinner, a toast with your guests, or simply the two of you and a glass of Napa wine watching the sun go down over the vineyards.

Why Choose Suzanne Karp Photography for Your Napa Valley Elopement
I did not stumble into elopement photography. I built it, deliberately and with intention, because I believe that intimate celebrations deserve the same level of artistry and care as the largest wedding of the year.
When you choose our team for your Napa Valley elopement you are choosing people who have done this together many times, who communicate seamlessly, and who are genuinely invested in making your day extraordinary. You are choosing a photographer who will have your gallery back to you within three weeks. And you are choosing an officiant who happens to be married to your photographer, which means the two of us move through your day as a unit in a way that most elopement teams simply cannot replicate.
If you are considering eloping in Napa Valley or Sonoma County, I would love to talk with you about what is possible.
